Post Post subject: Downloading Music... **LEGALLY** Reply with quote

i dunno if any of you know about this, but i just stumbled across it anyway...

@ msn they have set up a service to d/l music legally for a price...

permanent download (last forever & can burn to CD) = 99p
temporary download (last one year & cant be burnt) = 10p
stream download (listen to once) = 1p
30 second clips = free

i personally think its a step in the right direction as 99p for a song is better than paying £4.00 for one in HMV.. Crying or Very sad altho from first glance its mainly pop and so aint gonna much use to any of us lot.. Rolling Eyes

.. its probally gonna be the way of the future tho anyway.. Evil or Very Mad

out of interest.. how do you make an mp3 file so that ppl cant burn it to CD ?? surly it could be converted to wav ?? or played to MD via optical out and played back in @ no sound loss ??

Rolling Eyes

msn offers wma files, and not mp3 files don't they? wma files have codes to protect from burning, copying and also destroys itself at a given date.

it can of course be overcome...either by copying it manually through your soundsystem, or there will surely be some software doing it too...not sure if that would be legal though...

anyway....this is the way to go....just like itunes i'm sure this will be popular!

I'm never keen on purchasing music over the internet. I like to feel the end product, something there in front of you to say, yes its mine.

Its a good idea and sure it will take off but its not for me.

As for wma, just hook up a recordable device to your sound card and record. Weather thats legal or not is another thing tho.

But for those files that can only be played once, yeah, that messes up the plot. lol
I'd rather play $20 or $10 a month to download a certain amount instead of per song fees. That gets expensive as hell with my habits! lol
But I would pay to download, if there was a good selection.
And I hate WMA files!! They screw up my system. And that's Microsoft monopolizing the Internet again! Yurgh.

I agree with raynbo that there should be a solution to pay a fixed fee per month and download as much as you want, but it can't be done on a general basis at only $10 or $20 per month.

An alternative would be that you can download x number of songs at high-quality, and as many as you want at a lower quality...

£10 a month, still a bit steap for me.

Thing with these services is they offer mostly stuff thats on CD, if you a 12" hunter like me, it aint much use.

One good thing about internet buying is there's a lot more varietybecause you basically have as much space as you want for songs, where in a store you have a certain amount of space.
I think eventually movies will go this way too.
