Post subject: What is trance, techno and house? |
|
|
Hello!
I have been listening to electronic music for a while now. But I still cant classify them properly. Coulde anyone describe theses genres for me?
I want to know what kind of music I listen to.
At first I believed that Techno was the main genre for all electronic music but that was completly wrong. Now I can tell whats techno and trance but Im not 100% yet. And im completly lost in what house is. Explaing some major sub-genres would also be good, I think.
It would be nice if u also gave some good example for each genre too.
Thanks

Well, to save a big explantion, here's an example of a tune from each style:
TRANCE: Paul van Dyk - Nothing But You
TECHNO: Mauro Picotto - Amazing
HOUSE: Marshall Jefferson - Move Your Body
There's 3 very well known tunes to check out. You could break each down to the tempo, House, very steady groove. Trance, speedy uplifting breakdown styles and techno, fast repetitive bass. A little vague.
The easiest way to get to tell the difference is to listen to a few tunes from each style, build up an image of what tune fits into what.
To be fair tho, dont get worrying about all the different genres, as organised folk we like to put things in little boxes to keep them neat and tidy. Much better to be able to pick out a good tune from a bad one than to tell what style it is.

well this is what i think of when listening to them
trance; in utopia
house; in a lounge
techno; at some commercialized club (of course all of these genre's can be here, but for the most part you can kinda tell b/c techno can get really annoying after listening to it a few times - my opinion of course =P )
=)

Techno : The music: noisy melody, often no vocals, often hard beats and a pumping bassline. Like in all electronic music-genres it's different from sub-genre to sub-genre. Perhaps not the best deffinition, but at least it is one!
Names: Mauro Picotto (he has done some more uplifting trance stuff too, but not in the past), Carl Cox, Andreas Kreamer and Cris Liebling
Trance : The music: floating melody, soft bassline and nice fitting beats. This is also different from sub-genre to sub-genre.
Names: Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Paul van Dyk and the old Tiesto
House : The music: I don't know how to deffine housemusic, it's just slower than trance, the use of different elements is less and the bassline is less hard.
Names: Roger Sanchez, Dirty Vegas, Lenny Fontana, Kings Of Tomorrow and Deep Dish.
Better deffinition anyone ..............?

Techno - Often very little "real" melody - mostly has a lot of bass, beats and percussion that are used to make the sound of the tune.
Trance - Often has a very strong melody that is repeated throughout the song. The whole song sounds similar. Often has a strong bassline with extra synths, sounds and effects complimenting the strong, lead sound.

I may be all off and freakish in the head but I never got a clear sense either. I just always considered stuff like Prodigy (older?) as techno cause of the spartse beats and kinda grindy industrial synth bits. Trance is happier, even hard trance, which can get really rough at times, with much melody. I'm not sure what house is either, anything I don't like that I know for sure isn't any of the above I call house. lol
But then I like drum 'N bass and hardcore and so on.
But really, I wanna know what Prodigy is! haha I like them.

House concentrates on the hat and claps.standard 4 to flour repeats all the way-not much buildup.sometimes it has house synths but melody is usually simple

Prog, as in progessive trance is what reQuiem4adream is saying. There are different sub-genres of trance, which makes classification even more difficult.

Well, I have an older Prodigy CD and like it much, though don't know the name.
Can't we just call it music!? lol I'm getting a headache just thinking about all the styles of trance! haha Guess if I'm to do anything with it I must learn as well. Wish me luck.
Although, learning this is much more fun than studying algebra!! Eeek.

Thansk for all the replies, Very appreciated.
I think I got more ground on my feet now. This is how I would classify the artists I listen to:
Trance: Sunbeam, DJ Tiesto(not all his songs seems to be trance) and Armin van Buuren.
Techno: DJ Promo. Hes like hardcore techno or? Anyway looking for more stuff like his. The Mauro Picotto tunes I have heard some more like trance to me maybe he does both?
House: Well, I have heard Sanchezs Another Chance on the radio but Im not completly sure on what house is yet.
And then we got Astral Projection that people says is psytrance but I really kan differ tracne from psytrance.

A quick rundown on the trance sub-genres:
Melodic/Uplifting - Happy music that have uplifting, happy melodies or a strong melody, often repeated throughout the song. Has very strong bass and other beats and also other effects to compiment the main lead.
Ex. Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Minimalistix
Progessive trance - Trance that is slower that other genres with floating synths but usually no concrete, recognizable melody. "Takes you on a journey" as some people put it. It progresses from one sound to another.
Ex. Sasha, John Digweed, Deep Dish.
psy-trance/goa - A very fast form of trance with losts of squiggily noises and weird effects. Often has a killer lead synth that speeds through the song. Very strange music but I like it.
Ex. Astral Projection, Space Cat, Infected Mushroom
Hard trance - Trance with big beats, leaning toward techno but still with a trance-like melody.
Ex. Marco V, Mauro Picotto, Dumonde (a mix of hard and uplifting)
Hope this helps.

Yeah, the 3 first Prodigy albums were ace!
Dunno if they have released a 4th, but the singles released after the 3rd haven't been of the same high quality
Btw, they said they wouldn't produce anymore as the Prodigy after their 3rd album was released...

I saw an interview a few days ago where Liam said they have been working on a new Prodigy album and it WILL BE RELEASED in spring/summer '04. He said they started recording it some months ago. Album is currently titled "Always Outnumbered - Never Outgunned" but that's not confirmed to be the final title yet.. Also one single will come out b4 the album.
