Post subject: Will trance ever go big? |
|
|
just watched the MTV awards the other day
and i just cant believe that every awards won by the same people
with the same shit
50 cent,justin timeberlake,eminem...
is it just me or is the music industry getting too bored and predictable?
i wish theres a genre "trance video of the year"..but since MTV never plays any trance videos.
How many years do u reckon trance will be heard on mtv, public radio stations and go bigger than those pop shit?

I think trance will get big only if MTV etc. get new decision makers who loves trance....now they're obviously hip-hop, rap and rnb fans...
also the big record companies needs the same changes...as they have the big money and influence MTV and such big time...

Actually do you really want Trance to become pop ?
Do you want that everyone to be trancers?
I think a bit of the charm with trance is that we are as few as we are.
Maybe some more could listen to this wonderful music so that there will be some more cds and stuff availible, but not to many, then it isnt rare anymore.
And you do can fins trance on radiostations and on mtv, Just watch mtv on fridays I think it is (nights) then they have this dance eve or what they call it. Same thing to many radiostations.
Trance isnt Trance when it is pop !

Whenever a good track does get the commercial success it deserves it just about always gets branded cheesy because of Milk inc, Lasgo and the lot.
MTV, dont regard that as a good source to hear new Trance music, or even dance music. As stream says, its all urban music. Chart stuff.
I can never see how trance will be big in the mainstream, all your current chart stuff just has that preditable formula that makes people buy it.

| Trance could eventually go mainstream but i doubt it will be anytime soon trends and fashions change and if everyone did start listening to trance it would be cheesy and commercial stuff which they would call trance. I think it's better left how it is.

the extent of peoples misconceptions can go much further then that. amongst my peers, noone even knows what house music is...if they ask me what i like, and i say house, 90 % of the time i'll get "whats that?" followed by a joke along the lines of "can u listen to house if u dont live in a house?"
the same people cant distinguish drum and bass, house, or trance from one another if played in succession. they think its all the same: dance or techno.
with ignorance like this, the masses will only ever be able to tune in to formulaic cheese like milk inc lasgo etc like QbIx said. this stuff probably will go mainstream in a couple of years time, but the really good stuff will still be somewhat unique, and trancers will still be able to disassociate their favourite music from pop.
its just like all the hip hop around atm...there is the big name pop stuff u hear on mtv (eminem 50 cent ja rule <shudder>), and then there is quality stuff that hasnt sold out and is somewhat true to the genre (people under the stairs, maybe?) that nobody other than true fans know about
lets just hope that all the good trance producers out there stay true to their music and steer clear of the temptations of mainstream commercial success

Trance have actually been quite commercial here where I live in Norway, and then I'm not talking about cheesy dancemusic. Back in 98-99 almost everyone at the age of 18-19 liked trance; trance was really huge here and sold very well- thank Tiesto and Corsten for that. Our national dancechart consisted of 95 % trance; the rest was house and techno; todays it's like this: 1 % trance, 15 % house, 15 % dance, 2 % techno and 67 % r'n b, hip-hop, rap and pop (horrible stuff).I think it was in 99 that Tiesto visited the Top 20-shop in Oslo, and played a set during the show, would that happen today- no way! But what happened then; I don't know, perhaps people got tired of trancemusic, perhaps the music got worse and worse; I don't know, because I wasn't a fan at that time (I was too young). Today the scene is dying, so I really hope the trancescene in Norway will survive and build up to what it once was. But that would only happen if trance gets commercial, and I don't know if that's what I want. We need some new talents out there who can renew the scene; hopefullly guys from The UK, The Netherlands, Belgium or Sweden.

trance music is for the elite i think. people who can feel and share emotions yet are strong. i believe that if a person doesnt feel somethin while listening to "big" melodic tracks, he lacks somethin important, the intelligence to appreciate and live the musical experience.

| I hope it doesn't get popular. We'd have even more artists similar to DJ Sammy. Most of it is too long anyway & don't have lyrics. That wouldn't work on MTV, now would it?

Just a comment on this. It has been my experience that practically every genre of music has a commerical, mainstream part and a more underground part that fewer people have heard of. The underground people tend to sneer at the commerical stuff because it isn't true to the genre.
