im a upand coming DJ
i used to DJ UK garage but they went all grimy so i decided to start buying trance. but iv notaced in the last year that commercial is hated by loads of people. what isn't very good for me have 30-40 vinyls all of which are hated.
where/how am i ment to get club work if everyone hates commercial.
are there people/clubs that do like it?
if you want i will write 20-25 names of vinyls i have so you can get a feel of the kinda commercial i buy/play
thanks

Actually, I thought the purpose of commerical trance is it's like a mild version of pop, everybody can like it. A lot of clubs nowadays are commerical.
A list of vinyls would be good - there are different grades of commerical - very commerical or only somewhat commerical.
An response to the topic question, I'd say that the reason most people don't like commerical music or "cheese" is that it gives trance a bad name, and people identify trance by what they hear from Paffendorf or Scooter. Well, that kind of music isn't REAL trance, just a watered-down version so the artists can sell more albums. Also, the music is ofteb pretty bad too, compared to to non-commerical trance.
That's my take on it.
BTW, welcome to the forums! Hope you stick around!

Commercial trance...hmmm...i wouldnt be able to say either way...on the one hand, its good because its a gateway into trance, but its bad because sometimes people never progress past it, and think thats all there is to EDM. My personal opinion of commercial trance is its music with training wheels, and i don't care for it much...but i wouldnt go so far as to say its bad music.

Taking the extreme view you would say, Yes. Commercial trance give the respected and hard working proper trance producers a bad name and they dont get the respect for the work they do by the mainstream.
My take on it that it is proper *beep*, aside from some stuff which is catchy.
For your kind of stuff, im sure that there are a lot of clubs that have commercial and cheesy euro pop trance as a staple diet.

I just thought I'd add this: I don't think commercial trance is all that bad. Most people say that a track is "cheese" if they don't like it. Doesn't matter if it is or not, they seem to think that that is the ultimate insult.
Also, because of t5he wide-spread appeal of some of the best trance songs, they are called commerical because they sold really well and got on the radio a bit. For example, Ligaya. Wonderful tune, but people call it commerical not because of its sound, but because of its success.
I only commercial the stuff that is obviously commerical - Lasgo, Paffendorf, ect.
BTW, where's that vinyl list?

Commercial trance have some positive sides; it's easer to dance to and perhaps more easy to like for those who're not listening to dance/trancemusic usually, but it's also destroying (specially in Norway where I come from), because everyone think of trancemusic as music where everyone make "cover" or "remixes" of old pop/rock songs. Also I would say that it's more easy to make than less commercial trancemusic, like Ferry Corsten, Airwave, Matti Laamanen, Shane 54 etc. ; even though a lot of those who produce trance in a non-commercial way spend less time producing than those making commercial-music, like Ian van Dahl, Noemi, Angel One, etc. Sorry if I didn't answer/take up what you wanted!

I think commercial trance has its place & purpose. I mean I probably wouldn't be into trance now if it wasn't for the commercial dance/trance you hear in a club when you're 16-22 & don't know any better.
But as you get older & your appreciation for the music grows you realise what good trance is actually about.
Problem is, some people never grow out of that stage. I still have mates who think Darude's Sandstorm is the be-all & end-all of trance music
Each to his own I guess.

Agree on that.. like I started to listen to Scooter back in the days and with the time I discovered the beuty of trance.. So today I hate Scooter and are addicted to trance
I think that many other ppl have a similar story..

sorry for the late reply.
i love the lasgo,DJ-Sammy stuff but i also brought the new paul van dyk tune the otherday and i wouldn't say thats "cheesy"
but maybe your right, maybe i will grow into another style of trance
TBH.i don't know the diffirence between hard, uplifting, prog trance
also i don't have a "real" vinyl shop in my town, so i buy alot of my stuff from virgin.
i love the music i play but i don't want to buy LOADS of records and end up nowhere because everyone hates that kinda music.
is there any site that expains the diffirence between styles of trance?
BTW.i keep on meaning to find 10 mins to make a list of tunes in my bag.
i will try and do it soon!!
thanks for all your help!

PvD's Nothing But You, commercial track? Not a chance, thats one of those quality proper trance tunes that makes it over to the mainstream. being released on CD helped. Viceroys point proved is that.
Just becuase a tune makes it on the radio, sells a lot it is branded 'commercial' by folk and put away with milk inc and chums. Once of the many confusions in the trance game.

It seems to me your only after one thing from this sentence - popularity and to a lesser extent cash. At the end of the day play what YOU want to play, dont go changing your style just so you get bookings and a residency - fair enough you can if you want but realistically then its pointless DJ'ing if your just going to jump on the bandwagon to be popular. I personally dont like what most people call commercial/cheesy trance and avoid it like the plague, simply being that it has no depth, meaning and you can tell its badly produced in my opinion. I recommend reading 'How To DJ Properly', a good book which will explain lots of thingsto you if your new, eg. how to DJ, your motivation for DJ'ing etc... Also it seems to me your confused musically, i was the same when i started DJ'ing years ago - i knew the songs i liked and loved but always ended up buying shit alternatives as i was new to the scene and didnt know where to buy the stuff i liked. I can only recommend getting a sample of a couple of songs per genre to listen to and see if its for you and what genres you like. Heres a few suggestions...
Progressive Trance/House
Sasha - Xpander
James Holden - Horizons/Nothing
Bedrock - Heaven Scent
Max Graham - Dying to Survive/Sepia
Trance
Pulser - Cloudwalking
Jose Amnesia - The Eternal
DJ Tiesto - Urban Train
Midway - Monkey Forest
Techno/Tech - Trance
Ricky Fobis - No Regular
Bodyshock - Rain in the City
Green Martian- Industry/Wizardy
Marco V - Tolerance
Obviously all of the above are my opinions of the tracks and theyre genres so theres no need for posts correcting me...Tom

I think most of the commercial chesse is crap. But I also like Lasgo and Milk Inc. I hear a lot of people say tiesto is commercial because he's kinda mainstream (everyone knows who he is). I think artist that are popular, that make good music shouldn't be labeled commercial just because they are international stars now.

Completely agree on that point. Heaven forbid a new tune will be well-liked, because then it will be - gasp - cheese. People call Ligaya commercial! They call Nothing But You commerical! They call Cloudwalking commerical! They call every successful song commercial!
When will people learn just because a song is very well-produced and liked by non-trance people, it is NOT cheese?

no im not after popularity and im totaly not after money(i enjoy it so much i would do it for free!)
but i don't want to collect vinyls then find out i can't do what iv always dreamed of(playing in a club) becuase the club doesn't want a DJ that plays "cheese" all the time.
im going to start looking into other trance, so i can run a night off trance but also throw in a few cheesey tunes here and there
i might not of said this before but i do dance so its UK garage, vocal DnB but also trance. do you think that will change the kinda trance i should be playing
id like to do mostly trance with a bit of DnB,garage, cheese thrown in

DnB I am not a fan of, there are only a few tracks of that stuff that I like. Garage, hate it with a passion along with RnB. Not a fan of any urban music tbh and would not like to see it mixed in with trance.
I would have thought with a new upcoming DJ to get hold of something fresh and new, not just cheesy stuff that your mr avarage club DJ will spin most nights.
If your playing trance, dont mess it about with dnb and garage, my opinion thats all.

Hey guys. Sorry I have no quote thingies going on but I'm not so good with all the little HTML things on these pages. I could do it straight but.... Anyway.
OK, here I go.
Finally, I find a place to let out my thoughts.
1. I don't understand the whole "commercial is bad" thing. I guess if you have an elitist attitude and are like "only cool people listen to trance, EDM, etc." it makes sense. But isn't music about communicating with others, to share yourself or your feeling with people? I'd think artists/producers would be happy if their track was successful. Sadly, also because of the money. But anyway. I also think that commercial has a reason. I've gotten a lot of my friends into electronic music by letting them hear mainstream stuff, and then if they like it you gradually build up.
Oh, and as for mixing trance and DnB, I don't know if it'd go over so well. I'd personally love it but I'm the person who will listen to PVD and instantly change to something like rock or rap or something. I don't think too many people are like that though.
Now I'm done.
Raynbo
