Post subject: Help? (please read) |

ok, I am pretty much in the camp of the enemy at the moment, being a metal head in a trance/techno forum. DONT STOP READING!!!
Let me explain my situation, I write music for a couple of bands I am in. Both metal bands (one death metal one verging on being called crappy pop, but thats not the point lol)
Anyway, I was flicking through the channels on my tv and ended up on mtv dance instead of kerrang.
They had this program on which was an hour of trance and I sat and mouth oepned wider....jaw dropped.....guitar was hastely brought in as I had a load of fun playing over the top of these trance tracks.
THing is, I have no idea who what when where or how about trance. I love the sound, the way you can switch off and just be inveloped by the music, how it can completly remove you from the world, and I want to be a part of it, I want to hear it in the music I make and the music I write.
I apologise to all the purists in both camps who would kill me for wispering "trance-metal" but if you can forgive me for murdering your favorite music once I know what Im doing, I would be really greatful for some answers....
1. what types of gernes are there inside trance?
2. what artists should I be listenning to for examples/inspiration?
3. what elements make up trance? how's it made?
and anything else you think I should know, and use small words, I have no idea what Im talking about past about the same level your grandparents know about trance.
thanks all for your help in advance!
Neb.

This is a rather old post, but I'll answer it anyway...
1. Genres
The main genres inside trance are hard trance, melodic or uplifting trance, progessive trance, and psy-trance/goa.
Hard has big beats and usually less of a melody than other sub-genres. Quite often the melody of the song is made up of different bass beats, hats and other percussion.
Melodic or uplifting has very strong melodies. Uplifting is music that makes you feel good while melodic includes uplifting but also includes other trance with big melodies. Usually has a big main lead with strong synths supported with heavy bass beats and secondary background melodies. Example artists: Ferry Corsten, DJ Tiesto, Airwave/L-Vee
Progessive - this isn't my stuff at all. It is usually slower and doesn't have as much of a melody as melodic. Softer beats too. It takes you on journeys, and the song "progesses" or changes through the song. Example artists: Sasha & John Digweed, James Holden
Psy/goa- This is probably the most underground of any of the sub-genres. It is psycedelic and usually has big melodies, but not happy at all, usually quite eiree. Big beats and a fast tempo, usually frantic sounding. Examples: Astral Projection, Space Cat
2.. Check out the artist profiles at i:Vibes. Melodic/uplifting- the Dutch big three- DJ Tiesto, Armin van Buuren, and Ferry Corsten. Also Svenson & Gielen and Marco V, and M.I.K.E/Push/Plastic Boy.
The only kind of hard I can appreciate is the high-energy hard/melodic stuff like Dumonde and S.H.O.K.K. which is fantastic.
Psy and goa- there are tons of good artists like Infected Mushroom, Astral Projection, Space Cat, and Hallucinogen.
Progessive- Dave Seaman, Sasha & Digweed, and James Holden. Again, not my style.
3. Trance is made using sytheseizers and software, completely electronicly generated, no traditional instruments usually, although quite often synths will imitate instruments, especially strings.
Trance usually has big bass beats and a big main-line supported by lesser melodies, but of course every song and genre is different. Listen to a lot of trance and find what you like. Listen to that, support the artists, and have fun!
