| Do you think some artists have become too commercial, too mainstream? Who do you think are some commercial producers, and what makes them commercial?

For me a commercial artist is when they are only in for the money repeating their self again and again and again just to make more and more money... hmm don't really know about any real trance artist that is like that but if we would talk to dance it would be so easy to pich many! But trance nah don't really think so.. But doesn't commercial trance count as a genre ya know dance artists like Ian van dahl etc...?

Everybody has there own sense for what is deemed 'commercial' or not. An example I always use is the Ministry releases, pre 2000 copilations I'd have a look at buying but the stuff they have gone into, recent releases, I will never buy. I dont like the way they have gone. 'Trance Nation' was for me, a credible compilation series until after volume 4.
Nice to seen Gatecrasher still release pretty good compilations and not gone in the way of them. Godskicten pop up with some good releases to, I have to say I like their 'direct' release.
Commercial stuff for me would be the likes of Ian van Dahl, Lasgo, DJ Sammy. You could call it Euro pop, but I'd rate Sash (of whom's cd's i do own) and Alice Deejay's material in a different class to theirs. Even tho I'd say they are euro trance popy.
Here's an interesting thought though. Is a tune commercial just becuase Dave Pearce plays it? Even tho he probably stole it off the Judge, notice how he has been playing stuff recently that the good man Judge has been hammering for months. That said, Dave Pearce does play some quality trance at times.
It's whatever floats your boat I'd argue.

| I guess what I'm asking is if you'd consider artists like Darude, ATB, or Alice Deejay commerical. Especially Darude- of course, Sandstorm got a lot of radio play on "Top 40" stations all over the world. But does that make him commercial?

It's really hard to classify what's "commercial". We had such a discussion going on between some of the crew-members some days ago....couldn't come to any conclusion...but one of the things you have to ask yourself is:
does an underground artist become commercial as soon as he/she gets lots of airplay on radio or tv?
just take Iio for example....they were a big hit in clubs when their first track was played by dj's around the world...6-9 months later it was released as a single and the song was played all the time on radio and tv....being among the best selling records in many countries. So does that suddenly make them commercial artists producing commercial crap?
I don't think so...

If we talking about one single song no.. but if we talking about a artist that release more songs then yes and no... Cause sometimes when a artist do a big hit they often try to do a song that is like that song so their will be a new hit. Then they are repeating them self again and again and atleast I get boored of artists that are repeating themself to get a hit Like for example Scooter that did some good tracks some years ago...
You see my point?

I think its commercial when labels see too much money in their artist.
There must be quickly a follow-up to the first hit, there will be a videoclip and its almost earlier on cd than on vinyl (For example: Scooter, Jan Wayne) And its sound cheap, produced too easy, every release sounds the same.

Yeah but you can't really blame Scooter's label cause they have Sheffield Tunes which is their own label... Yeah Kontor owns Sheffield Tunes but Rick and H.P owns some % of Kontor so blame Scooter!
I know all this stuff cause I was a Scooter fan some years ago

an artist isn't ever commercial in my eyes. we make them as such in our own minds and perceptions.
tracks may be as cheeky as they come, but obviously SOMEONE likes them or they wouldn't be charted. we all know that some tracks come and go like the wind. let them. it's up to us to decide whether or not we want to present "this" type of music or "that" type of music.
it's all about presentation.
if the crowd/night wanted something, and i had it that night, i would play it. just because the crowd wanted it. it's a communication thing with the dancefloor. you tap into that. you can't go wrong.
what's wrong with playing a cheeky record if it's fun? i think that's what's wrong with some events/clubs. the fun has disappeared! it's gotten so serious that we sometimes forget to laugh at ourselves and have some fun for once!
one SUREFIRE way to disband a group of trainspotters is to drop a cheeky/cheesy track. it's like a reality check really. "hey, quit standing there, being a dj, and go f*&$ing dance mate!"
have some fun with it. who made the rules?!!!!

LAClubber surely got a point there
Seems the orients is very much influenced by commercials though....the big record companies pays enormous amounts of money on tv and radio commercials to get "their" artist popular....and every time lots of people get tricked to believe it's something they want to buy...
same goes with all other products too though...it's just how humans are
just an example...in norway i've seen 3 commercials lately....all promoting female country artists (i just can't stand country music!!)...all 3 of them sing with a terrible english accent....and all of them sell VERY well...just because they are promoted on tv every day...and their cd is available in every record store, grocery store and gas-station in norway
