Comes from the word Maquina (machine) - pronounced 'makina'. 'Music that comes from machines' - a bit in the same way you could think about the word techno - 'music from technology'.

It's 90% similar to UK happy hardcore (vocals, cheesy melodies, 160 -170 BPM) but recently features a lot of trance and nu-skool gabba noises (always tends to have a slightly irritating scratchy noise too).

The scene has been the predominant dance music style on the East coast of Spain (Catalunya / Valencia). Raves tend to get up to 10000 people down and the DJ tends to MC himself (as he's mixing!!)
In the last few years house and techno have started to push past as the main-stream dance music for young people.

Check names like Jose Maria Castells and Johnny Bass if you want to hear good examples of maquina.

(Sort of) walking encyclopedia -

Maquina is Catalan - my girlfriend is Catalan and I've been over there a lot and even DJed at maquina clubs.

In the UK I do NEO in Birmingham, Cypher in Leeds, Bonkas in Manchester and I work in the UK's longest running rave shop - The Spin Inn (www.spin-inn.com)
