Lot's of ideas for making new MP3 sites abound. However it seems quite obvious that MP3 dist site's days are numbered. Instead of distributing your music as MP3s why not just distribute them in mixes? Why do ppl need to d/l an MP3 of a track, it's much better to hear good tracks in a mix. Like on www.DJ7.net for example.
No record companies have approached me even though I distribute mix CDs of copyrighted material, and radio streams. The reason is that I'm not harming anyone's sales by doing this. Perhaps you should stop to think about how MP3 distribution is harming the industry? A decent Trance producer like L Vee or MIKE or anyone may only ship 10000 units of a tune at the most. How many of these units are lost cos ppl get the tune on MP3 instead? A hell of a lot if you go by the number of hits most "good" mp3 sites get.

The age old argument. Y'know.. I think mp3s are a big promotion to trance artists. Espically here in the US. You can't listen to this kind of stuff here. Now I agree, that the little kids that download every single mp3 they can, burn them all to CD and never buy anything.. those people are pretty damn annoying. And the best part is, they think they are pretty damn cool and "elite". I admit, I have TONS of mp3s. But.. I also have TONS of CDs and 12"s. Most of which I'd never ever thought of looking for if it wasn't for hearing them first from somebody online. And I wish more people had my attitude. But "such is life" I suppose.

Bullsh!t man !!!!

once there was a time before mp3z,
most tracks weren't even known by most people. (im talking about trance & techno etc...)
Nowadays new songs are better known then ever tnx those mp3z
and the most money producers get is from the vinyls they sell, and once again there was a time before mp3 exist, the local dj went to his local vinylstore and hears a song, if he liked it, he bought it, meanwhile several other good tracks are released somewhere on earth. And the dj dont even know that they exist.
So tnx to mp3z dj's are able to hear more songs @ their home and they can choose again which tracks they liked, and buy them online or somewhere

so what is the moral of the story:
Keep those mp3z online and producers can promote their tracks online "FOR FREE" so djs can buy them later on vinyl.

And Tiesto himself once said that if mp3 didn't exist he wouldnt be as famous as he is now and thats a point for all producers

It differs though from top50 and other commercial music, they get their money from cds they sell.

DJ7 -what you do in your site is the lowest level a mp3 fan can reach.
to stream a set or make it available as a free d/l is fine ,but to make a set out of copyright vinyl's/cds and SELL it for profit that's low very low-I got no respect for you at all- No record companies have approached your 100 hits a day site yet sure ,but not for long now..I'm actually surprise the admin here hasn't del your stupid post yet-admin-are you cool with this kind of posts?

My arguement is simple: What would u rather have? Serious music lovers enjoying their trance and passing the euphoria on to others? or, having tom, *beep* & harry buying up Tiesto & Corsten records left right and center? Before you know it we'd have the same situation as garage and drum n base is in. Mainstream to the extreame!!!!
Believe me, the mp3 trance community on the the net is the only true source for Trance today, labels like Ministry Of Sound are milking the trance 'mix album' so the net is such a great place to get the full 12 inch versions. Yeah, maybe the artist is loosing some cash (cash he never had) but at least the fans are gettin the music, and they're the people who count, unless your a spineless record executive that is. Some good points here. If you buy a half decent mix CD these days most of the mixes on there are cut down. Not all/most trance tunes make it onto CD these days so those who can't get their hands on a set of decks and the 12" are missing out of some class music.

Plus listing to the tune on MP3 is a good thing because if its good your more than likely to go buy that tune or more of the artists albums and tracks. MP3 opens up a whole world of music that for most people is just not available otherwise.

Hey Wink

Why worry about mp3 hurting CD sells etc? People hear music everywhere, be it on your pc, in the shops, in the clubs... We don't have to pay for it, but when we like what we hear we might most often buy the CD they're on.
People tend to like having the 'original' CD where the tune's on. At least I do Smile
Mp3 music is a very nice business for the unknown artist to be perceived by not only the DJ, but the audience as well. More artists get really famous and more artists sell even more.

While this shouldn't all be about the money, every artist that makes good music gets appreciated by the fans. I guess, in my opinion that should be the artist's main satisfaction, not the money he gets. He'd simply loose his love for his music and you'll see the quality drop in a sec.
I have this case at mp3.com too, where artists move to www.ampcast.com now because of a better pay/play rate over there. While quality of webpage design and visits is alot better at mp3.com, they still choose ampcast. Why? Because of the MONEY. Now where's your music? Smile

Greetz,
Wim

Well I think I'm going to have to agree with you here Lightworks as you have made some good points speaking for the mp3 scene.

Yes, it is true that alot of people use mp3s to save them from buying the CD, but this is certainly not everyone...ALOT of people who like an mp3 will buy it on CD (as Lightworks said, some people prefer to have the original) and if a DJ likes an mp3 hes almost guaranteed to buy the vinyl.

So what's the problem with mp3? That is, what's the problem if you're not in it for a quick buck - but are in it for the exposure, and most importantly, the MUSIC.

This was an unfair poll. I have added an extra option as a 3rd option.

DJ7 did you only include the first two options because you know that what you said is wrong and you know nobody will agree with you because you are so insanely wrong? Yes you are wrong and you are even more wrong.

The record industries rip off artists as well as making the mp3 community like some mafia shit.

I am a producer and I say one thing! F U C K record companies who are anti-mp3 they suck and should not have a say about what goes on online.

No I am being biased but i dont give one s h i t e because this subject annoyes me so much and i never use bad language!

In the MP3 debate it's crucial to look at the numbers. Last year Napster's popularity and mp3 trading was at an all-time high, and the RIAA was crying foul. The RIAA claimed Napster was hurting them but this appears to be a blatant lie. Last year the recording industry's sales and profits were up approximately 12%. While some critics claimed raising prices was a necessary reaction to combat the MP3 movement, there is no evidence of the RIAA ever losing money due to MP3s. Furthermore, it's not like CDs were underpriced to begin with.

I think the real problem with the music industry is that businessmen have the power, not musicians. I think mp3s will only present a problem the day they are able to sap the musician's creativity, instead of simply being a control issue on the business side.

If it weren't for mp3s, I admit I wouldn't be on these forums now. In fact, I would never even listen / be aware of trance, at all! I live in Canada and its hard enough for me to find good CDs at my local music stores. Only one place comes to mind, which has a small section called "Electronica". Last year it was a section half the size, tucked away at the back, called "Underground". I'm very much in favor of mp3, since its got me this far and introduced me to some real quality music. Mp3s are great for sampling music to see if you like it before buying, and if you don't like what you hear, then you save yourself money. Now in my case, if I like the artist enough I will buy the CD, to support them, and also because CDs sound better, plus I like having the real thing.

In short: Because of mp3, I've spent hundreds of dollars more than I would have without it.
Too bad artists don't get more money from the album sales oppose to the record companies...
