I'm bored with nowt to do, so I'm going to write a bit on Trance and my thoughts on 1999 and the Big 'Boom' in Popularity.... if this makes no sense ignore me Laughing

1999 is the year everyone talks about in Trance, when it became popular to the mainstream market and every man and his pet dog were 'Trance fans' A Lot of tunes were out that year, and as much as there were good ones like Blank & Jones 'Cream' System F - Out of the blue and Gouryella - Gouryella, people seem to forget that there were also tunes that were utter garbage and don't deserve much mention, tunes that DJ's like Dave Pearce & Judge Jules caned week in, week out until they were so boring you turned the radio off, for example DJ Jean - The Launch, Everyone loved it when it came out, but then it was on every single compilation, every radio station and people assumed that every song was like that.

If you look at most of the crowd that was into trance in 1999, they aren't now into it, I know this from experience, my brother and all his mates worshipped compilations like Trance Nation & the Cream ones. well now they go around slagging it off and listening to music like blink 182, linkin park, once again going around and following trends, leaving behind the true fans of trance, who know that trance is for life and not just for 1999 Very Happy

What a lot of people don't understand is that there was life before 1999 in the trance scene. Personally I remember tunes from before then, the first 'Trance' tune I heard was BBE - Seven days & 1 week and at the same time were Vincent De Moor - Flowtation, Humate - Love Stimulation and Armin - Blue Fear, Most of these predate 1999 by 2 or 3 years, yet when someone is asked for a trance anthem, they say PPK or Ian Van Dahl. Personally that pisses me off, Artists like Bedrock, Sunbeam and too many others to mention have been doing plenty of quality productions since the early 90s onwards.

Perfect Examples of that came in Radio 1s Dance Anthems when one vegetable called in and said 'my all time favourite Dance anthem ever of the year is ppk' I couldn't stop laughing, this woman is either drugged upto the eyeballs or a complete vegeatable. My money is on both Laughing

It'd be cool if we could have a section on the classics, where we could compile a list of the old tunes from Bedrocks - From what you dream of through to the stuff from 98, to help educate the newer listeners who got into this from 99 onwards. There are a lot of newbies to trance so it could be cool and help them understand where it came from.

hmmm, another post I seem to have missed out on!!

I have to agree with you on that. That tune was barley 5 minutes old and the silly tart was saying its her fave anthem of all time. That particular show was the top 30 anthems of all time (if I remember correctly). The scary thing is, PPK wern't number 30 or 28, it was number 7! Christ! Number 1 was Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar, and credit where there's credit due, its an awesome tune!

I also remember a time before 1999, I also have BBE Seven Days & One Week somewhere on cd single, I used to be into the old Disco Citizens stuff 'Footprint' & 'Right Here, Right Now' which later became 'Strong In Love' under the more famous Chicane alias. 1999 was an excellent year for trance, granted, but forget about all those priks who are now into Blink 182 and alike, we're a hell of a lot better off without them! w@nkers.

That was my little opinion, goodbye. Very Happy Very Happy

Should I say something scary...... I even listened to Milk Inc before and during 1999! Songs like Promise Me and In My Eyes were great in my opinion. Nobody gave a damn bout that songs, but after 1999 suddenly Milk Inc gets popular and Walk on water became a huge hit and then there were suddenly Milk Inc Rip-offs like Sylver, Ian van Dahl and Lasgo. I know the most of the real Trance lovers of 1999 now listen more to progressive Trance, but there are (including me) also Trance lovers of 1999 who now like it more roughly.

in 1999 trance finally came in to the mainstream and got alot of attention and made a name for its self....

then after 99 its gone back down underground and taken alot of fans with it...

hopefully if trance can do the same this year and become mainstream threw the summer.. the genre will get more awareness and become stronger and stronger... Laughing

this is particuly true in england.. im not so sure about else where esp in europe cos its alot more popular over there... but in england we have far too many of the annoying muppits that go by the name 'moshers' Twisted Evil

Evil or Very Mad

PPK's resurrection is a wonderful tune in its own right. There's no need to slag it

PPK's resurrection is a good tune but i would'nt even put it anywhere near my top 30 favourite trance anthems thats for sure.

Have to say, late 1998 and 1999 was when i started getting into music and Trance, ironically the first compilation i bought was Trance Nation and its follow up Trance Nation 2, still regard those as very fine albums.

Still love trance to this day and I have to admit its my favourite style of music, no disrespect but i just can't stand the bollox by Linkin Park and the like.

Just a wonder tho, Nu-NRG - Dreamland, one of my favourite trakcs around at the moment and I've not herd it played anywhere (radio, local clubs etc), I dont think even Radio 1 have given it a play. Only folk who I've herd pushing it out is PvD. Just a shame he dont do a UK radio show.

Interesting to see where Trance goes this year and what new material can come out that gathers peoples intrests.

Yeah a PVD show would be great here in the UK. You'll probley find that Nu-NRG's Dreamland will pop up later on in the year, after the summer maybe, and we'll all be sitting back going "Bloody Hell, i had this yonks ago!!!!" Thats happening alot these days... It only takes Jules or Pierce to start spinning your tune regulary and bhaam!! you've got a possible hit on your hands Smile

By the way, ive already found a bootleg of Dreamland, NU-NRG Vs Annie Lennocks: Dreamland/Little Bird. Its ok, but i prefer FNPs Annie Lennocks Vs York bootleg myself. Very Happy

ppk was a massive tune, but wot most ppl don't realise is that it got released in 2001 coz paul oakenfold was scouring the internet for new talent...went to mp3.com and found PPK - ReSurection. but the song had actually bin made in 1998! tho it was 2bpm slower than the version released...so in theory that was a good trance tune that was made before 1999...i probably make no sense but u mite get the jist of it! Surprised

there are good tracks and garbage being released every year. so i really don't see how that statement about the launch makes any significance. also, i don't agree with that bandwagon jumping comment either. i first got a taste of trance in the summer of 99 and since then i have not gone back. i haven't jumped ship and said trance sucks now and this and that. however, i do think trance has evolved and changed since that time and there will be people who can accept these changes and some cannot.

98-99 was the "big boom" for a reason. for me, it was the aura within the music that attracted me to it. every single track made me feel special when i listen to it. nowadays, especially in 2001, that feeling is non-existent. perhaps its a degrade of quality in the music? or the effects just wore off over time? i'm not listening to the right tunes? i don't know.

people have their specific reasons and every one of them could be different. i don't think its fair to just throw them all into a bunch and label them as bandwagon jumpers.

thats just my 2 cents Smile

I heard that he (Oakenfield) was handed a white label of PPK at a gig and thats how he discovered it! Mind you, ive been aware they've been around for a while, i have an old mix album from 1998/99 with a PPK tune as the first track. Good album too, 2 cd mixes by Mauro Picotto & Lange. Very Happy
